About Group Therapy
Group therapy is a process that involves a small group of individuals meeting weekly (in group format) with 1-2 clinicians within the practice. Often, groups are designed for a particular purpose or with a goal in mind. At Birch Psychology, a variety of groups have been developed to meet the varying needs of children and families.
Who we work with
People come to group therapy for all kinds of reasons. Our groups may support individuals who are:
Navigating a particular life challenge, role, or transition
Feeling isolated, or like no one around them quite "gets it"
Wanting to build practical skills and healthier coping strategies
Hoping to learn from others walking a similar path
Looking for connection and encouragement alongside professional guidance
Ready to invest in their own growth within a supportive setting
You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from a group. Many members join simply because they want community and a place to feel understood in whatever they’re going through.
Our approach
Our groups are led by experienced, doctoral-level clinicians who draw on evidence-based, relationally focused methods. While every group is shaped by its specific focus and the people in it, our work together often centers on:
Creating a safe, confidential, and welcoming space
Encouraging honest sharing and mutual support
Building practical skills that members can put to use right away
Drawing insight and strength from shared experience
Supporting growth at both the individual and group levels
We see group therapy as an opportunity to benefit from the professional guidance of an experienced clinician and the camaraderie of peers navigating similar experiences.
What to expect from group therapy
A warm welcome. From your first session, you'll find a space that feels safe and judgment-free. We know walking into a room of strangers takes courage, and we make it easier.
Genuine connection. These groups are built on honest discussion and shared experience—not someone talking at you. You'll listen, share when you're ready, and learn from people walking a similar path.
Practical takeaways. You'll leave with tools and perspectives you can use right away, whether that's a new way to communicate or simply the reassurance that you're handling more than you give yourself credit for.
A confidential space. What's shared in the group stays in the group. Trust and privacy are the foundation that makes meaningful connection possible, and we take protecting that seriously.

FAQs about group therapy
-
Group therapy is a clinical treatment led by a licensed clinician, focused on working through mental health concerns. A support group centers on shared experience and mutual encouragement among people facing something similar. Our groups are clinician-led and blend both professional guidance and support from peers.
-
Group therapy is a great fit for people who feel isolated in what they're going through and would benefit from connecting with others who understand. If you value shared perspective, want to practice new skills in a supportive setting, and feel ready to both give and receive support, you may benefit from group therapy.

Group therapy isn't right for everyone. You'll get less individualized attention than in one-on-one sessions, and it asks you to share in front of others, which can feel uncomfortable at first. For some concerns—especially those needing focused, private work—individual therapy may be a better starting point.
At Birch Psychology, we offer a full range of mental health services, including individual therapy. If you’re unsure which service is right for you, please contact us for a free consultation.
