A Calming Tool

In many forms of therapy, whether with children or adults, learning and practicing relaxation techniques is an important component. In some cases, a well-learned coping tool can provide an individual with a sense of power and control over their own anxiety and distress. In other cases, relaxation techniques can allow an individual to delve more deeply into difficult material. There are a number of techniques that can help facilitate the process of deep relaxation. For instance, a child in therapy will often hear the phrase "smell the flower, and blow out the candle" to help encourage a flow of breathing in and out, slowly and deeply.
